Apple Podcasts out. Overcast In.

Apple Podcasts out. Overcast In.

I know I said no posts until 2018 but I refound the Squarespace app on my phone which makes the blogging process not bound to my laptop. I also have lowered my quality standards.

  • Mobile only.
  • One review after typing.

I wasn’t winning any awards for the “quality writing” before so please excuse a more stream of consciousness writing style.

Additionally, I am still experiencing things at work, home, and life in general where I feel I need to document my thoughts on the intersection of the digital and physical worlds.

In late September, I updated my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 11. With that came an update to the Apple Podcasts app which made it unuseable.

Ever since switching from being an Android guy to an Apple guy, I have become more ok with the standard functionality of devices and apps. I just want them to do the standard things well. Not a lot of bells and whistles or custom configuration.

I listen to podcasts while walking the dog, running, working out, and driving. All activities where I really don’t want to be touching my phone a whole bunch.

The update to Apple Podcasts took away the feature which made it possible to play a list of podcasts consecutively. It now requires you to open and select the next podcast every time after the previous completed.

Given how I listen to podcasts, this feature was tablestakes. I did some quick googling and found several sources point to Overcast.

Overcast has a few different ways you can sort the podcast episodes AND play the consecutively.

Apple Podcasts out. Overcast in. Unless the feature goes away or becomes hard to use, this is permanent.

Contrary to the popular breakup line: “Apple Podcasts its you, not me.”

 Check it out yourself!
